Pastor’s Reflection for March 26, 2017

Dear Parishioners,

One of the activities of Lent is Almsgiving. I thought this article might be of interest to you.

We have all heard the saying that money is the root of all evil, thinking that it is one of the teachings of Jesus. It is not. What Jesus did condemn was all that can take us away from dependence upon God. What Jesus condemned was allowing money to become an idol – a false God to which people devote themselves.

It is the love of money that Jesus condemns, not money itself. Money is morally neutral. It’s how we use money – how we regard money – that can be the source of a great deal of evil. Do we control money, or does money control us? No man can serve two masters, Jesus told us (Mt 6:24). Where are our hearts? Greed can cause people to do all sorts of evil things.

The misquoted version (“money is the root of all evil”) makes money and wealth the source of all evil in the world. This is clearly false. The Bible makes it quite clear that sin is the root of all evil in the world. Wealth is morally neutral; there is nothing wrong with money, in and of itself, or the possession of money. But it’s important to remember that even though money is a useful tool, it can control us and cause separation from God.

This is why Jesus said, Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and vermin destroy, and thieves break in and steal, but rather store up treasure in heaven… for where your treasure is, there also will your heart be (Mt 6:19-21). Trying to serve two masters is impossible because we will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other.

We will continue to have The Light Is On For You on the Wednesdays of Lent for confession from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Please see page 4 of the bulletin for more details.

We are in the process of the Catholic Appeal. If you have not yet made a pledge you may do so online or by completing a pledge form which is available at the back of the church.

May Jesus continue to shepherd you in all of your needs.

God love you,
