Pastor’s Reflection for July 24, 2016
This week, we have the celebrations of St. James (July 25), Saints Joachim and Anne (July 26) and St. Martha (July 29). Saints are inspirations for us in how to live a spiritual life.
St. James was the brother of John. He was one of the three apostles who witnessed the transfiguration of the Lord. Following the Lord’s Ascension, he traveled and spread the word of God in Spain. He returned to Jerusalem but was martyred for his faith by King Herod.
St. Martha had a special relationship with Jesus. Jesus was a frequent visitor to the home of Martha, Mary and Lazarus. She was a woman of faith and courage. She is the patron saint of servants and cooks.
Two weeks ago, we had children in Grades 3-6 come to our summer supplementary CCD program. We recognize that parents are the first teachers of their children in the ways of faith. We offer a supplemental program to provide additional teaching for the children. This also helps to gather the children as a community of believers that pray and learn together. This is normally done for one hour, one day a week during the school year. This year we decided to have those who were interested to meet for a week from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. This gave some time for intensive study and a variety of activities. The children enjoyed the week and learned different aspects of our faith. The most important subject was to learn how to grow in their friendship with Jesus. We have learned over the years that spiritual life is a daily activity to be learned at home and not a one day a week classroom lesson. I wish to thank Sharon Keith who is our Religious Education Director for this supplemental program. I also wish to thank all the parents who take their responsibility in helping their children to learn their faith and especially to grow in their friendship with Jesus.
I will be available for confessions this week on Monday, July 25, from 3:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
May Jesus continue to shepherd you in all of your needs.
God love you,
