Pastor’s Reflection for July 17, 2016
Recent past events make us wonder, “what is this country, the world coming to?” There is so much division, killing, fear, mistrust and questions. What are the solutions? Do we make new laws? Do we have more meetings to discuss the situation? Do we hide away and retreat? I would suggest that we listen to our creator and maker. He gave us directions and instructions of how to live this life. We find His teaching of loving God and loving one’s neighbor simple. Is the answer that simple? Well – yes it is. It is a simple answer but not easy to put into practice. To give time to be in relationship with Jesus, you must take time. How many people don’t take any time to pray? Basically, God is not that important. We can do without Him. We can make the laws and rules, acting as if we are now sitting in the chair of creator and maker. We can remove God from the marketplace but to do so is at our own peril. We have done so and look at the results.
To love one’s neighbor. To see the other as a brother or sister. To serve the needs of the other. Can you imagine if we all had that attitude? We devalue life today. We see the uproar of people being killed today and rightfully so. Where is the uproar of those who are killed behind the scenes, namely those innocent babies in the wombs of their mothers?
We need to recognize our sinfulness as weakness and our dependency upon God. Simply put, we are like a car on a hill. If you put it in neutral, it will roll down, do damage, and suffer damage. If a car is parked on a hill, you need to put on the brakes. The same is true with us. If left to our own desires and feelings, we cause havoc within and without. We need to discipline our lives, put on the brakes of our sinful desires and live according to the ways taught by Jesus. This is the answer to our problems today.
As we sing, “let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me,” let us cleanse ourselves of our own darkness of anger, unforgiveness, self centeredness, jealousies and other destructive behaviors and contribute to the healing of this troubled world.
We renewed our Symbolon program, FORMED, through which you can access the truth, beauty, and meaning of the Catholic faith anytime and anywhere on your computer, tablet, or smart phone. If you are not already subscribed, you can access the program by visiting www.formed.org. Scroll down to the “individual” section, enter parish code e5d163, click “submit code,” create your profile and click “submit profile.” I encourage you to take advantage of this program. We need adults to grow in their faith formation and especially for parents to hand down their faith to their children.
I will be available for confessions this week on Tuesday, July 19, from 6:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
May Jesus continue to shepherd you in all of your needs.
God love you,
